What Does a New Puppy Need? A UK Checklist

15 October 20262 min read

A practical checklist of what to buy before and after your puppy arrives.

Bringing a puppy home is exciting, and it helps to have the basics ready first. Here is a simple checklist.

For walks and safety

  • Collar with ID tag. In the UK, dogs in public must wear a collar with the owner's name and address.
  • Harness. A well-fitting harness spreads pressure across the chest. Puppies grow fast, so choose an adjustable one and check the fit often.
  • Lead. A standard 1.2 to 1.5 m lead is a good start.
  • Poop bags and a holder. See walking and travel.

For eating and drinking

  • Food and water bowls, with a slow feeder if your puppy gulps food.
  • A feeding mat to protect the floor.

For sleeping

  • A comfortable bed or crate mat, big enough for the adult size or with room to grow.
  • A soft blanket that can be washed.

For play and chewing

  • Safe chew toys and a few puppy toys to rotate.
  • Always supervise, and replace toys that start to break.

For grooming

  • A soft brush and a comb, see grooming.
  • A nail trimmer or file, introduced slowly with treats.

For training

  • Toilet training pads and a door bell, see training.
  • A clicker and small treats.

Speak to your vet about vaccinations, microchipping, food and worming. This list covers the kit, not medical care.
