Measure your dog's chest and neck in two minutes and choose the right harness size first time.
A harness only works if it fits. Too loose and a dog can back out of it; too tight and it rubs. The good news is that you only need a soft tape measure and two minutes.
What you need
A soft tape measure (or a piece of string and a ruler), some treats, and your dog standing relaxed on all four legs.
Step 1: measure the chest
Wrap the tape around the widest part of the chest, just behind the front legs. Keep it snug but not tight, so you can slide two fingers underneath. This is the most important measurement for most harnesses.
Step 2: measure the neck
Measure around the base of the neck, where a collar would normally sit. Again, leave room for two fingers.
Step 3: check the weight and back length
Many size charts also give a weight range. Back length, from the base of the neck to the base of the tail, matters for vest-style harnesses and coats.
Which size should I choose?
Compare your measurements with the size chart on the product page. If your dog is between two sizes, choose the larger one and use the adjustable straps to tighten it.
Check the fit once it is on
- You can slide two fingers under every strap.
- The harness does not twist or slip to one side.
- Nothing rubs behind the front legs.
- Your dog cannot pull their head or legs out when you gently pull back.
Different types of harness
Padded no-pull harnesses spread pressure across the chest. Mesh vest harnesses are light and breathable for warm days. Reflective styles help your dog be seen on dark evenings. You can see the full range in our collars and harnesses, and match one with a lead.
