How to Make a Salt Dough Paw Print (and Easier Alternatives)

16 October 20264 min read

A simple salt dough paw print recipe for dogs and cats, with step-by-step instructions, baking times and mess-free alternatives like inkless kits.

Quick answer: mix 1 cup of plain flour, half a cup of table salt and roughly half a cup of water into a smooth dough. Roll it out to about 1.5 to 2 cm thick, press your pet's paw firmly into it, then bake at a low temperature (around 100°C, or the lowest setting) for 2 to 3 hours until hard. Leave it to cool, then seal it with clear varnish. Keep the finished keepsake out of reach of pets, because salt dough is toxic if eaten.

A salt dough paw print is a lovely, low-cost keepsake for a new puppy or kitten, an elderly pet, or as a memorial. Here's how to make one, plus mess-free alternatives if your pet won't cooperate.

What you need

  • 1 cup (about 125 g) plain flour
  • ½ cup (about 140 g) fine table salt
  • About ½ cup (120 ml) warm water
  • A rolling pin and baking tray lined with baking paper
  • A round bowl or cutter to shape the edge
  • A straw or skewer (if you want to hang it)
  • Clear varnish or Mod Podge to seal
  • Optional: acrylic paint, letter stamps or a cocktail stick for writing the name

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Mix the dough. Combine the flour and salt, then add water gradually, mixing until you have a smooth dough that isn't sticky. If it's sticky, add a little flour; if it's crumbly, add a few drops of water.
  2. Knead. Knead for 5 minutes until smooth.
  3. Roll it out. Roll the dough to about 1.5 to 2 cm thick so the print will be deep enough. Cut a circle or heart larger than your pet's paw.
  4. Prepare your pet. Choose a calm moment, perhaps after a walk or meal. Have a helper hold and reassure them. Trim long fur between the pads for a clearer print.
  5. Press the paw. Hold the paw gently and press it straight down into the dough, pressing each toe slightly, then lift straight up. If it smudges, roll it out and try again.
  6. Personalise it. Write the name and date with a cocktail stick or letter stamps. Make a hole at the top with a straw if you want to hang it with ribbon.
  7. Bake. Bake at around 100°C (or your oven's lowest setting) for 2 to 3 hours, depending on thickness, until completely hard and dry. Thicker pieces may take longer. Alternatively, air-dry for several days, turning occasionally.
  8. Cool, paint and seal. Once completely cool, paint if you'd like, then apply two coats of clear varnish to protect it from moisture.

Safety: salt dough is toxic to pets

Salt dough contains a lot of salt, which can cause salt poisoning in dogs and cats if eaten. Supervise your pet throughout, wipe their paw straight afterwards, and keep the dough and the finished keepsake well out of reach. If your pet eats any salt dough, call your vet straight away.

Tips for a clear paw print

  • Use a firm, even pressure. Too soft and the print will be faint; too hard and it will be blurry.
  • Cats often dislike having their paws held. Try when they're sleepy, and keep sessions short.
  • For puppies and kittens, have a treat ready and be quick.
  • Make two or three at once, then choose the best one.

Ideas for using your paw print

Frequently asked questions

How long does salt dough last?

Properly baked and sealed salt dough can last for many years. Keep it dry and out of direct sunlight.

Can you air-dry salt dough?

Yes, but it takes several days and the print may crack. Baking low and slow is more reliable.

Why did my salt dough puff up?

The oven was too hot. Use the lowest setting and bake for longer.
